Renewed Motivation

OK, so aside from the lazy blogging lately (youtube is a lousy substitute for the true dish), I have a little bit to blog about that doesn't consist of lame movie reviews, cynical coworkers, or caustic observations.

Last weekend J and I drove up to Lake Geneva to hang out and get some sun. We stayed at a friend of her family's lakehouse. This guy? Joe Martin, syndicated cartoonist behind several long running comics, like these:

Willy and Ethel:

Mr. Boffo:

And Cats with Hands:

You think I was a little nervous meeting the first guy in a field that I've dreamt of going into all of my life? A lot. Let me start by telling you guys this: Joe and his wife, Marie, are two very kind, laid back people, and I wasn't even unpacked before he heard about my skills and sent me packing to J's car to grab my packet of Sterno comics.

Well, J and I went out on Joe's boat with his son, D, and J's sister, brother-in-law, and niece. We cruised around the lake for a few hours, drank copious amounts of brew, and swam a bit until we were starting to get hungry. Funny thing about Joe's house is this- It's a converted monestary, and it's a HUGE place. 19000sq ft...nice game room, theater room, pool in the backyard, tennis court on the side of the house, and enough bedrooms to keep a 9 year old preoccupied all summer. Well, we arrived back to the house and Joe called me over to give me his straight take on my stuff. I sat there and heard him critique my strips (as did about four other onlookers!!), and when he was over, he gave me some sound advice. I won't bore you with these details, but I can tell you this- I'm completely hyped to get my stuff to the next level, and it was painful to go in to work on Monday when all I wanted to do was draw, draw, draw.

The rest of the weekend was blissfully chill (aside from the 100º weather), and J and I played some tennis, swam in the pool, and poked around Lake Geneva. Marie was a true saint, and I ate so well throughout the weekend that my belt is feeling a little snugger than before. I got to listen to Joe talk about the comics industry, the players, and his experiences all along. I know J was probably bored silly listening to a lot of these conversations, but to me? I was hanging on every word. The guy needs to write an autobiography. I'd be first in line to buy it.

And in conclusion? Joe's just a normal (albeit he posesses a slightly eccentric take on the universe, but that's pretty common for this line of work) guy that busts ass on his craft. He wrote damn near nonstop through the weekend (I think we were giving the guy ideas left and right...ha!), and he draws at a pace that I found remarkably efficient.

Yeah, I know now what I have to do, and having heard his advice, I plan on going full tilt again.

Thanks for everything, Joe and Marie! See you at the Reuben Awards!

4th of July...Happy Birthday America!

Aw hell, where'd THAT weekend go so suddenly? A nice four day break from the office, and it cruised past at the same speed as a normal 2-day'er. Grr.

So, I have some 'splainin' to do, right? What's the deal? I'll tell you. I have been taking some video with my new camera, and although it's pretty funny stuff for the most part, I'm still struggling with learning the video software well enough to splice the clips together into something that would approach a reasonabl;y entertaining level.

So, I guess all I can say is, "Hold on to your horses...the images and video is coming. Sometime."

Ohhhkay. And now to recap-

Friday evening, I cruised into the city to hang with some friends at a BBQ. Good time- Baggo, brew (discovered that Leinies Seasonal Wheat is a killer flavor beer), and met this printer rep that has been trying to hookup with me to persuade me to throw some new business his way. On that note, let me just say that he was a cool guy, but seeing him hooking up with an ex-gf of mine didn't exactly help his cause much. Duh.

Saturday, we all woke up, ate at a popular lil joint called Hot Doug's, and then gathered our stuff together for the following festivities. We cruised down to Mokena, where our pal Dan lives, and we chilled some more, played some more baggo, and prepartied for the Nine Inch Nails show. The show? Awesome. Peaches (skank) and Bauhaus opened for NIN, and all in all, they put on a pretty solid show (even if the mosh pit was extremely weak). I always love going to these shows just for the people watching. Oh, and Barley's little cousin was so wrecked, he accidentally stepped on some girl's head. Then offered to buy her a beer out of sympathy. Ahhh...to be 23 again.

Sunday, I arrived home, napped, and grabbed my pens to get a few new comics going again. It's going. I swear. Two done and a few more in pencils.

Monday I did more of the same , and in the evening, J and I hooked up. We grabbed some more of the aforementioned Leinies, drove to her sister's home, and I met the fam. Yes. I. Met. the. Family. They were really nice, actually. Her brother in law asked me about on of my old employers (the royal ass that runs that magazine I worked at for three months). I declined to comment, but told him, "If you know the name, I probably don't have to tell you anything you don't already know".

I was right.

Tuesday was nice and chill, again. Laundry, downtime, a bike ride, and then met up with J and her friend Lisa before we grabbed dinner and went to watch the fireworks.

Anyway...

I'll try to get you guys some recent pics as soon as I can. Until then, I hope you enjoy this old video of yours truly:

I hope it works...
